Veterans Affairs B100 Emergency Room Expansion

Location: Seattle, Washington

ORA provided a geotechnical engineering study for a future emergency room expansion. Our scope of services included a reconnaissance of the site, a review of geologic literature, drilling of two borings, and preparation of a geotechnical design report. We also provided on-call geotechnical and structural inspection and testing services during construction. The engineering services were performed by ORA to provide the following information:

  • seismic design considerations including liquefaction potential
  • suitable foundation systems with estimated settlements
  • allowable bearing capacity for the design of shallow foundations
  • recommendations for the design of deep foundation (augercast piles, grouted micropiles, and driven steel pin piles)
  • lateral earth pressures and friction coefficients for the design of below-grade walls and retaining walls
  • influence of groundwater on the development
  • site preparation and earthwork recommendations, and
  • project specification preparation related to grouted micropiles and driven steel pin piles.
The structural inspection and testing services performed by ORA included the following items:
  • Soils compaction
  • Moisture testing
  • Reinforced concrete
  • Structural steel erection
  • Fireproofing

Veterans Affairs Hospital MRI Addition

Location: Seattle, Washington

This project involved geotechnical engineering study for an MRI addition consisting of a two-story structure. ORA was engaged to evaluate the overall subsurface soil and groundwater conditions at the location of the proposed building. Our scope of work included a site reconnaissance, a review of geologic literature, drilling of two borings, and preparation of a geotechnical design report.

The following geotechnical engineering services were performed:
  • Retain a utility locating contractor to evaluate the locations of the proposed explorations,
  • Complete subsurface explorations to evaluate the subsurface soil and groundwater conditions
  • Develop logs of the observed soil and groundwater during the exploratory drilling
  • Perform testing on selected samples in our laboratory (sieve analyses, moisture contents as appropriate),
  • Develop seismic design considerations including liquefaction potential
  • Develop recommendations for suitable foundation systems with estimated settlements
  • Provide an estimate of the allowable bearing capacity for the design of shallow foundations, if appropriate
  • Develop recommendations for the design of deep foundation, if appropriate
  • Provide an estimate of lateral earth pressures and friction coefficients for the design of below-grade walls and retaining walls
  • Provide an evaluation of the influence of groundwater on the proposed structure and construction, and
  • Develop site preparation and earthwork recommendations

Overlake Medical Office Building and Parking Garage

Location: Bellevue, Washington

This $54 million project at the Overlake Medical Hospital involved a major addition which included a six-story medical office building and a parking garage. The medical office tower contains services such as an ambulatory care center, a cancer center, a pharmacy and a children's hospital specialties clinic.

ORA was engaged to provide complete structural inspection and materials testing services for the project over the duration of approximately one and a half years. This project also required a full-time resident inspector.

Swedish Medical Center SE Tower

Location: Seattle, Washington

This $60 million project is a continuation from the original three-story SE Wing with the new construction of an eleven-story structural steel frame addition above the existing structure. The new tower includes an Oncology Center, Physical Medicine and Critical Care Units, Women and Children's Center, and the expansion of an existing Birthing Center.

ORA was engaged to perform onsite structural inspections and materials testing services as well as overseas structural steel fabrication inspection and nondestructive examination. Structural steel was fabricated by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea at their Tangjin plant. Built-up columns were fabricated by Kawasaki Steel Corporation's subsidiary company, Kawatetsu Metal Fabrica Corporation, located in Marugame, Japan.

Harborview Medical Center Expansion

Location: Seattle, Washington

This $103.7 million project involved construction of a major addition to the Harborview Medical Center, consisting of an eight-level trauma center and two new wings which include a nine-level northwest tower and a seven-level southwest tower.

ORA was engaged to provide complete structural inspections and materials testing services for this capital project over a duration of approximately three years. The complexity of this project required a resident inspector assigned with quality control.
